California Fitness is a multi-branch fitness business in Cancún, Mexico. This is where my career began (Ale Zanello): first running a branch, then moving into the IT organization and building the software the business ran on.

IT Manager — 10/2017 – 11/2021

Location: Cancún, Mexico · Stack: PHP, MySQL, Selenium, Cypress

  • Built and maintained a fully custom web CRM in PHP and MySQL, shipping weekly improvements across all branches.
  • Introduced QA automation with Selenium and Cypress covering the CRM and the mobile applications.
  • Replaced manual business processes with automated workflows, and maintained and optimized the production database.
  • Managed the external ERP integration project with the vendor, and ran eCommerce and online client support.

Owning the CRM end to end — feature work, database, testing and vendor integrations — taught me the habits that show up later in my engineering: ship small and often, automate repetitive checks, and keep the production data healthy.

Branch Office Manager — 01/2016 – 10/2017

Location: Cancún, Mexico

  • Managed branch operations, staff training, inventory and provider relationships before moving into the IT organization.

Running a branch gave me first-hand knowledge of the processes I would later automate as IT Manager, which is why my software tends to start from how people actually work.
